ISRAEL, MY HOME WHERE I BELONG!

Shalom!
I am Devorah from California, and I recently made aliyah in January 2009 at the age of 21. I formerly lived in Anaheim, although I was born in France. I studied in Berkeley where I received a degree in English. Yeah! After aliyah, I was fortunate enough to get a job. I am working in Jerusalem and living in Givat Ze’ev. I will be joining the Israeli army for a year in October.
People are curious why I came to Israel. But I can honestly say I never felt proud to be Jewish until I went to college where I rediscovered my Jewish identity. After coming with Taglit to Israel, I felt a connection to the land and knew that this was my home, Israel, where I belong.

TREES OF RIGHTEOUSNESS

In Parshas Shoftim, the Torah states: "For the man is like a tree of the field"- (Deut. 20:19) This is one source for the comparison between the man and the tree. Proper care of a tree is important in order for it to continue to produce fruit. Compare this care to that of a man whose fruits are his children, his offspring. Three things are needed for man to give forth the fruit for which he was created: the Mitzvot. 1. The ground is needed for man to live upon, which produces all of man's needs. 2. Man himself, who must take from the ground material to make a mitzvah. 3. Water, the word of G-d. Torah is compared to water. We combine the aspect of the tree, which is giving its best, its fruit, to the aspect of man giving his best, the mitzvah of the recognition of G-d's goodness in our Land.

WISDOM: "FROM THE MOUTH OF BABES"

Author and lecturer Leo Buscaglia once talked about a contest he was asked to judge. The purpose of the contest was to find the most caring child. The winner was a four year old child whose next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife.
Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there. When his Mother asked what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said, “Nothing, I just helped him cry.”

Only a Little Light
